  जगद्गुरु श्री कृपालु जी महाराज का जन्म 1922 में शरत्पूर्णिमा की शुभ रात्रि में भारत के उत्तर प्रदेश प्रान्त के प्रतापगढ़ जिले के कृपाली धाम मनगढ़ ग्राम में सर्वोच्च ब्राह्मण कुल में हुआ। इनकी प्रारम्भिक शिक्षा मनगढ़ एवं कुण्डा में सम्पन्न हुई। पश्चात् इन्होंने इन्दौर, चित्रकूट एवं वाराणसी में व्याकरण, साहित्य तथा आयुर्वेद का अध्ययन किया। 16 वर्ष की अत्यल्पायु में चित्रकूट में शरभंग आश्रम के समीपस्थ बीहड़ वनों में एवं वृन्दावन में वंशीवट के निकट जंगलों में वास किया। श्रीकृष्ण प्रेम में विभोर भावस्थ अवस्था में जो भी इनको देखता वह आश्चर्यचकित होकर यही कहता कि यह तो प्रेम के साकार स्वरूप हैं, भक्तियोगरसावतार हैं। उस समय कोई यह अनुमान नहीं लगा सका कि ज्ञान का अगाध-अपरिमेय समुद्र भी इनके अन्दर छिपा हुआ है क्योंकि प्रेम की ऐसी विचित्र अवस्था थी कि शरीर की कोई सुधि-बुधि नहीं थी, घंटों-घंटों सूछित रहते। कभी उन्मुक्त अट्टहास करते तो कभी भयंकर रुदन। खाना- पीना तो जैसे भूल ही गये थे। नेत्रों से अविरल अश्रु धारा प्रवाहित होती रहती थी, कभी किसी कटीली झाड़ी में वस्त्र उलझ जाते, तो कभी किसी पत्थर
